Did You Know? Dolphins Sleep With One Eye Open!

Dolphins can rest half their brain while the other half stays awake — so they literally sleep with one eye open!

Dolphins Sleep With One Eye Open! 🐬

This is wild: dolphins never fully fall asleep!

They use something called unihemispheric sleep — one half of their brain sleeps while the other half stays awake. This means one eye stays open to watch for danger and to remember to come up to the surface to breathe! After a while, the two halves swap. Pretty clever, right?

Ocean Art Time 🎨

When coloring a dolphin, draw one eye closed and one open — and explain why! Ask your kids: “What would it be like to only sleep half your brain at a time?”

Fun fact bonus: Dolphins call each other by name! Each dolphin has a unique whistle, and they respond when they hear theirs. 🎶
