Did You Know? Giraffes Have the Same Number of Neck Bones as You!
Despite their super-long necks, giraffes have exactly 7 neck vertebrae — the same as humans!
Giraffes Have 7 Neck Bones — Just Like You! 🦒
Look at that loooong neck! You’d think giraffes would have hundreds of neck bones, right? Nope — they have exactly 7, just like humans!
The difference is that each of their vertebrae can be over 10 inches long (25 cm), while ours are tiny. This is actually true for almost all mammals — from mice to whales to giraffes — we all share the same number of neck bones!
Tall Art Time 🎨
Color a giraffe stretching to reach the tallest tree. Try to draw 7 sections on its neck! Ask your kids: “If YOUR neck was as long as a giraffe’s, what’s the first thing you’d reach for?”
Fun fact bonus: A giraffe’s tongue is about 18 inches long and it’s purple-black to protect it from sunburn! 👅
