Did You Know? Blue Is the Rarest Color in Nature!
True blue is extremely rare in plants and animals — most 'blue' things in nature are actually playing tricks with light!
Blue Is the Rarest Color in Nature! 💙
Look around you — true blue is almost impossible to find in nature!
While the sky and ocean appear blue, they don’t contain blue pigment. Most “blue” animals (like blue jays and blue morpho butterflies) aren’t actually blue either — their feathers and wings have microscopic structures that scatter light to CREATE the appearance of blue. Only a handful of living things produce true blue pigment.

Can you draw 5 things from nature that look blue? Then put a star on any that are TRULY blue! Ask your kids: “Why do you think blue is so rare in nature?”
Fun fact bonus: Blue eyes don’t actually contain blue pigment either! They appear blue because of the way light scatters in the iris — similar to why the sky looks blue. 👁️
