Airplanes Get Struck by Lightning! ✈️⚡

Afraid of flying in a storm? Don’t be: every commercial airplane gets hit by lightning about once or twice a year, and it’s completely safe!

Airplanes are designed so that lightning enters one point (usually the nose or wingtip), travels along the outside of the metal body, and exits from another point — without ever entering the cabin or damaging anything important. The last lightning-caused accident on a US commercial flight was in 1967, and planes have been redesigned since then.

Sky-High Art Time 🎨

Draw an airplane flying through a cool thunderstorm with lightning bolts bouncing off it! Ask your kids: “If you could fly through any kind of weather, what would you choose?”

Fun fact bonus: Pilots sometimes trigger lightning strikes! When a plane flies through charged clouds, it can cause the lightning bolt itself. ⚡
